Yuhong Liu with the Computer Science and Engineering Department has received a $68,198 award from San Jose State University (funds originated with National Institute of Standards & Technology) to support her project "Effect of Distributed Energy Resources on Fairness of Utility Rate for Grid-Interactive Residential Buildings."
The goal of this project is to develop a framework that can assess fairness and benefits of distributed energy resources (DER’s), particularly energy storage elements, with respect to different utility rates. The primary knowledge advancements of the project are 1) to identify how a utility tariff scheme can help or discourage adoption of DER’s, and 2) to evaluate how randomly aggregated network of DER’s can contribute to a load shifting at a larger scale. The proposed tasks will shed lights on integration of electric vehicles with bidirectional charging capacity into building energy simulator and optimization of building energy system with energy storage elements. Outcome of the results will guide the policy maker and utility provider to encourage the adoption of DER’s, and to develop more fair utility tariff scheme to distribute benefits in an equitable manner.
