Yi Fang with the Computer Science and Engineering Department has received a $187,559 award from DOCOMO Innovations, Inc. to support his project "Responsible AI Design and Implementation in Information Retrieval Systems."

This proposal addresses the development and integration of Responsible AI principles in the field of Information Retrieval (IR). The main objective is to create search engines and recommendation systems that not only excel in providing relevant, timely, and accurate information but also ensure fairness, respect privacy, and exhibit transparency in their algorithms. By incorporating multidisciplinary approaches from large language models, ethics, compliance regulations, and technical design, we aim to conduct research on bias detection and mitigation, the development of explainable AI algorithms, and the integration of these advancements into existing IR techniques. This project promises to set a benchmark for ethical IR systems, advancing the field in a socially responsible direction.
