Associate Provost for Faculty Personnel and Policy since July 2020, Dr. Murphy is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies. Her scholarly interests focus on biblical literature and the interplay of economic and imperial forces that shaped Jewish and Christian communities in the early Roman period. Her scholarly work includes refereed journal articles, book chapters and a 2001 book, Wealth in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Qumran Community (Brill), which explores the literary and archaeological evidence for shared property in this early Jewish ascetic community. Kitty teaches courses on the New Testament, the historical Jesus, gender and sexuality in early Christianity and biblical interpretation, and postcolonial perspectives on the Bible.

Kitty has been a member of the SCU faculty since 1998, with service and leadership experience that includes the Santa Clara University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, the University Coordinating Committee, the Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries, the 2018-19 Presidential Search Committee, the College of Arts and Sciences Rank and Tenure Committee, and the Ignatian Faculty Forum.
