Sophomore and Junior Families

Your student has reached their sophomore or junior year, transitioning beyond the excitement of their early college experience to focus on deepening their academic journey and personal growth. These pivotal years are about refining goals, gaining meaningful experiences, and preparing for life after college. Here’s what your students can expect during this transformative time and how SCU is committed to supporting them every step of the way.

Exploring and Refining the Academic Path
By now, your student has likely declared a major or is close to deciding. This is an opportunity to dive deeper into their field of study by taking upper-division courses and connecting with faculty who can guide them on their academic journey. SCU provides academic advisors and career counselors to help ensure your student’s chosen major aligns with their goals.

Encourage your students to continue building strong relationships with professors who can support their academic and professional aspirations. That first-year tip still applies—each quarter, your student learns from at least four faculty members, all of whom bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. These professors are eager to share their expertise and may even offer opportunities to collaborate on research projects that can enhance your student’s learning experience and resume. All your student needs to do is ask.

Gaining Real-World Experience
This is an ideal time for students to develop professional skills through internships, service-learning programs, and hands-on projects. These experiences allow them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges and prepare for their future careers.

At Santa Clara, students can access numerous resources, including the Career Center, where they can explore career opportunities and attend Career Fair events to connect with potential employers. They can also engage with the local community through service programs or expand their cultural and global perspectives by studying abroad. Opportunities are available throughout the academic year—students just need to stay open-minded and actively participate.

Preparing for Leadership Roles
This stage of the college journey is an excellent time for students to take on leadership roles and make a meaningful impact at SCU. Whether through clubs, student government (ASG), tutoring, or mentoring first-year students, there are countless opportunities to grow personally and professionally while leaving their mark on campus.

Santa Clara offers various leadership opportunities, including becoming a Community Facilitator (CF) in the Residential Learning Communities (RLCs), holding executive positions within student organizations, or taking on fellowships or roles at one of SCU's Centers of Distinction. These experiences not only enrich your student’s time at SCU but also prepare them for future success.
