Basic Needs Committee

The Basic Needs Committee is a campus-wide cross-functional committee responsible for the implementation of an action plan to provide a timely, efficient, equitable, and effective response to students with basic needs insecurity.

The committee is guided by the following principles, which inform the approach to address basic needs:

  • Students using basic needs services should be central to organizing and visioning the work.
  • We should pay close attention to equity and inclusion and be culturally responsive.
  • We should work in collaboration with other basic needs activists and services in the larger community.
  • Research should regularly guide the services we offer.

The Basic Needs Action Plan identifies four goals and associated actions, which the committee will steward toward completion. The four goals are:

  1. Establish a Basic Needs Program.
  2. Increase awareness about basic needs resources offered at SCU from less than 30% of students to over 50% of students by 2024.
  3. Decrease the percentage of students experiencing basic needs insecurity at Santa Clara University, prioritizing food and housing insecurity.
  4. Partner with universities and regional and national networks in the Basic Needs ecosystem to lead change.
