What experience and training should an individual have before starting a business? Steven Morgan, ED.D, President at the University of Laverne, uses his career experience to detail the importance of learning as much as possible about the business before embarking.
A lesson I have learned throughout my career is that it is one thing to look at a business from the outside and it's quite another to be running it from the inside. People, for instance, go into a restaurant and they think, "Oh I could run this restaurant"; it's so much more complex than it appears. So if we're thinking of starting a new business of our own, it is important to learn as much as we possibly can about the business before we begin. It's also important to have a good solid education behind us. Whether it's high school, college, or graduate school, it depends on the business and what the requirements might be. But, the more we know about the business and the related subjects, the more likely we are to be successful in our endeavors.
