Rite Aid Bans Facial Recognition use
According to the FTC, Right Aid used facial recognition technology to track and lift suspected shoplifters while storing personal data on them.
Irina Raicu, director, internet ethics, spoke with NBC Bay Area's Scott Budman on the matter.
"It turns out the algorithm doesn't match the right people to the right images so we had thousand of false positives and inaccurate matches were people who had done nothing wrong were being followed or kicked out of stores."
"It's a known fact that facial recognition algorithms have been working less well on anybody with darker skin tones so they are more likely to generate false positives."
Irina Raicu, director, internet ethics, quoted by NBC Bay Area.
