Diep presented on behalf of Erik Risa, Sindhu Venkat and Bergren Antell. |
| Casey Kiyohara '17 (bioengineering) has been admitted into the Ph.D. program of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, starting September 2017, with full scholarship and payment of all tuition fees and benefits, etc. |
| Computer engineering Ph.D. student Peter P. Nghiem’s paper, ”Towards efficient resource provisioning in MapReduce,” is one of the top 5 most downloaded articles in the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing (JPDC) at an average rate of around 200 downloaded per month! |
| Damani Nkeiruka, civil engineering senior, has been named to ASCE’s 2017 class of New Faces of Civil Engineering – College, “demonstrating the potential to lead the profession to new heights." |
| Bioengineering senior Erik Risa '17 has been accepted to the University of Washington Medical School! With future plans of being a neurosurgeon or neurologist, he is a Markkula Center for Applied Ethics 2016-17 Honzel Fellow in Health Care Ethics, focusing a research project on neuroethics. |
| Alanna Sewalt ’17 (bioengineering) has been chosen by the Board of Directors of the American Society of Safety Engineers San Jose Chapter and the Bay Area Environmental Safety Professionals as winner of a $1500 Fall 2016 EHS Scholarship. |

| Tonya Nilsson (civil engineering) has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Civil Engineering Division of the American Society of Engineering Education. This is a 7-year term. |
| Sally Wood (electrical engineering) has been reappointed to a three-year term as a member of the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the IEEE, which publishes "articles of broad significance and long-range interest in all areas of electrical, electronics, and computer engineering." |
| Jonathan Zhang (bioengineering) has added another US patent to his collection. The technology solved the medical problems of hyperemia and corneal neovascularization from corneal suture of bio-3D printed hydrogel lenses (separate patent). The FDA approval processes have been underway for its white and red technologies. |

| Benin Solar Lighting Update: Jacob Leatherberry '16 (electrical engineering) reports that the solar microgrid he and Senior Design teammate Nico Metais '16 designed and installed last spring has more than doubled and now more than 300 people (up from 133) in Alafiarou have lights and can charge their cell phones. |

In Memoriam
| Vincent A. DiTomaso ’50 (electrical engineering) died of heart failure peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family on December 14, 2016. When Vince arrived at Santa Clara as a first year student, he joined the unique Class of ’50. Read more. |

| John Hopkins, P.E. ’74 (M.S. Public Works Administration) passed away in December, 2016. An ardent friend of Santa Clara University, he served on the Board of Fellows, on the Department of Civil Engineering’s Advisory Board, and on the School of Engineering’s Alumni Board, and was a perennial judge at the School’s annual Senior Design Conference.
