Sociology Club highlights events they've hosted throughout the winter and spring quarters

Throughout this 2023-24 academic year, the SCU Sociology Club has put on numerous events for our community, to grow closer as students, to discover the ways sociology touches every part of our daily lives, and to explore post-graduation options. We are extremely grateful for all of our board members, including Isa Fernandez ‘25, who joined us in the Winter of 2022 and is the current Communications Chair, and our most recent board members, Janelle Abbott ‘25 as Finance Chair and Carla Schmitt ‘26 as Marketing Chair, who joined in Fall of 2023. We could not have accomplished all that we did this year without the support and hard work of our team, alongside our committed members and our faculty advisor, Professor Hunter.

Through the quarters, we’ve held a few TV and movie screening nights, watching Barbie in Fall Quarter and Black Mirror episodes in Winter and Spring Quarter. Each viewing has been accompanied by dinner and a discussion debriefing the social implications of each episode. Our biggest collaborative event of Winter Quarter was with SCU’s MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) club. Continuing on our Food at the Root event series, since our initial collab with ASA (African Student Association) in Spring of 2023, we shared a meal and discussed the importance of the intersectionality and significance of food, culture, and identity. We wrapped up the Winter Quarter by creating wellness packages that we took to Sunnyvale Community Center, where one of the staff members, a former Sociology Club President of San Jose City College, offered us a tour of their facilities. In addition to offering students career exploration opportunities, we have held two events in which we offered free headshots for students to update their online professionalization presence. This spring quarter, we combined the headshots event with a networking picnic (pictured above) to celebrate the warm weather and offer support to one another during midterms.

As our last event of the year, we hosted an end of the year party in the Forge Garden for the Sociology Department faculty and community members to celebrate everyone’s accomplishments and hard work. With this party, we are also welcoming our 2024-25 Co-Chairs, Isa Fernandez and Carla Schmitt. As our time as SCU students and Sociology Club Co-Chairs comes to an end, we are extremely grateful for all that these past years have offered us. We are so proud of what this club has accomplished and the amount that it’s grown since its re-institution here on campus in Winter of 2022. Keep an eye out for all the amazing things the club has to offer in the future as we know we are leaving it in great hands!
