Reading and Book Signing of Professor Alma M. García’s Memoir
Club Oasis: Childhood Memories, Recipient 2021 Latino International Book Award for Best Young Adult Nonfiction Book
In mid-October, the Sociology Department, Sociology Club, and Latin American Studies co-sponsored a reading and book signing of Alma M. García’s memoir, Club Oasis: Childhood Memories. In Club Oasis: Childhood Memories, Alma M. García recreates her early childhood by introducing us to Pinky García, her younger self, who grows up in the border city of El Paso, Texas during the early 1960s. Pinky develops from a playful nine-year-old far beyond her years in maturity into a blossoming adolescent displaying compassion, pride in her Mexican heritage, an unwavering commitment to her family and the values they instilled in her: respect and love for family, particularly her father, fierce independence and belief in the power of education and the confidence to believe in herself while always maintaining a spirit of adventure and a sense of humor. The event was introduced by special guest Francisco Jiménez, award-winning author of The Circuit and Professor Emeritus at Santa Clara University.
