Molly King Recognized by the College of Arts and Sciences
Bernard Hubbard, S.J. Creative Collaboration Award
In recognition of having established a well-deserved reputation for excellence in educating students by including them in professional research projects or creative activity, thereby transcending traditional teaching models to reach the heart of the research and creative process.
For Molly King, assistant professor of Sociology, the inclusion of students in her research is her passion. She consistently provides hands-on research experiences for numerous students resulting in several, co-authored publications. Consider this footnote from her own CV:
"…an asterisk indicates that the co-author was an undergraduate student when the project was conducted; I denote this to indicate my interest and enthusiasm in working with students, and it should not be interpreted in any way as devaluing their contributions.”
Undergraduate research assistants even pop up as the topics of her peer-reviewed articles, like “The Undergraduate RA,” published in the journal, Teaching Sociology (2022) with co-author Megan Imai ’23.
Recent alumna Ana Martinez ’23 started out on her first research team with Molly, feeling like a self-described “fish out of water.” But working with novice researchers is an area where she believes Molly “shines.”
“Molly isn't satisfied unless all of her RA's feel supported and encouraged in their work,” said Martinez. She went on to join Molly and two other students in developing the “Teaching & learning guide for disability and climate justice” published in Sociology Compass (2022).
“Dr. King made it clear that my education was a priority for her and that our research would be a learning opportunity,” wrote current student Annie Yaeger ’26. “After working with her for two years, I feel more confident in my purpose in college and beyond…I can’t imagine anyone more deserving of this award.”
