Media Sociology Symposium

Department sponsors symposium in August 2021.

The SCU Department of Sociology sponsored the Media Sociology Symposium held on August 5, 2021. The event was organized by Program Committee Co-Organizers and Co-Chairs Laura Robinson (SCU) and Julie Wiest with Committee Members:  Wenhong Chen, Ken Kambara, Jeremy Schulz, and Ian Sheinheit. SCU students Barbara Baptista and JD Worcester served as student committee members. The Symposium was housed by the ASA Section on Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology with a special panel organized by CITAMS current and in-coming Section Chairs Andrew Linder and Jenny Davis. The Symposium was keynoted by Professor Ralph Schroeder of the Oxford Internet Institute who spoke on “Digital Media and Social Theory: the View from Modi’s India and Xi’s China.” Truly an international event, the Symposium brought together scholars from six regions: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East in real time across a twelve-hour virtual event.
