  • Change to Commonspot Authoring Login

    Monday, Jul. 28, 2014

A modification has been made to Commonspot which forces all logins to now be performed over a secure connection, or SSL. This change only effects authoring on the Commonspot cms.scu.edu server, and doesn't have any impact on your content, either on cms.scu.edu or www.scu.edu.

Some background: When your browser connects to a web page, there are two different ways it can do this: either with a secure, encrypted connection or a less secure simple "plain text" connection. On Santa Clara's web environment most pages can be accessed either way. In addition, there are also multiple ways of accessing the Commonspot staging server, which include cms.scu.edu, cms01.scu.edu, and staging.scu.edu. For example, ALL of the following URLS point to the same content

    https://cms01.scu.edu/webpublishing/blog.cfm

    http://cms01.scu.edu/webpublishing/blog.cfm
    https://cms.scu.edu/webpublishing/blog.cfm
    https://cms.scu.edu/webpublishing/blog.cfm

Both 'cms.scu.edu' and 'cms01.scu.edu' are the same, and the URLs that begin with https at the beginning are the secure ones.

On Monday, July 28th, any login page, such as http://cms01.scu.edu/webpublishing/login.cfm on a non-secure connection, will automatically be redirected to it's secure counterpart, in this case https://cms01.scu.edu/webpublishing/login.cfm. As such, you will now do all of your authoring over the https connection. If you've bookmarked a page on the non-secure connection, it won't know that you're logged in to the secure version, so you may get confusing results or think your page has moved.

The solution: update all of your cms.scu.edu bookmarks to access the same path on https://cms01.scu.edu/. Also remember, this change has no effect on the www.scu.edu production servers where you are sending your end-users.

  • Blog Sharing Options Updated

    Wednesday, Jun. 18, 2014

The Blog system in Commonspot includes an option to display links to a variety of social media platforms. This option has been updated to include a sharing link for each post in the default blog theme list view, and enhanced sharing options in the blog post detail view. The shared content will include the blog post title and summary text, and if your blog post includes an image, that will be included in the content shared with Facebook.

  • Google Analytics in Commonspot

    Wednesday, Jun. 18, 2014

Commonspot includes a subsite configuration option for Google Analytics. If you have access to SCU's Google Analytics reports, you can view Analytics data for any Commonspot page when logged in to the CMS. View the help page for guidance on setting this up for your subsite.

  • Recovering Lost Pages

    Wednesday, Jun. 11, 2014

If you've deleted a page in Commonspot, it can't be restored within the system. However, you may be able to recover content from Google's cached content. Prepend "cache:" to the url of your page in Google Search, and it will display the last cached version, if one is available.

    Example:

    cache:http://www.scu.edu/webpublishing/

  • Database Server Migration

    Tuesday, Mar. 25, 2014

We plan to migrate the www database server to a new host on March 25th, starting at 11pm. Updates to some databases accessible from www will be unavailable during the migration, although read-only access will be supported. We expect the migration to be complete by 12:30 am on the 26th.

Update: the migration has completed, and database update access has been restored.

  • Flickr slideshow change

    Thursday, Mar. 6, 2014

If you're using the Flickr Slideshow element for an embedded photo set that originates outside of the SCU Flickr account, you'll need to update the element settings.

Flickr now requires the username for the account. The standard SCU account name is "santaclarauniversity". If your photo set is in a different account, enter the username in the element configuration form.

  • Course Listing

    Friday, Feb. 28, 2014

Looking for an easy way to list course descriptions in your web site? Try the Course Listing element in Commonspot. This will select course description text from Peoplesoft, and will automatically update if the official course descriptions are changed in the administrative database.

  • Printer Friendly view and print

    Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014

The base template style sheet has been updated to include formatting optimized for print. The style sheet removes the header, navigation and footer sections of the page content, and appends URL paths to any link text. When selecting File > Print in your web browser, this style sheet will be applied.

For pages that had used the original version of the "Printer Friendly" element, that now will open the browser's print dialog window and apply the new print style sheet.

  • Disqus Comments now available for any page

    Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014

Previously only available as a comment option in the Blog system, you can now add the Disqus Comment form to any Commonspot page. You'll find the element in the Content Well element gallery category. The element has one required configuration setting - the unique name of a Disqus account. The Disqus site has instruction on creating an account.

  • OS Patches on Thursday, 1/23/14

    Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014

We have OS patches scheduled for cms and the www servers this Thursday morning, starting at 9:30 am. Here's the schedule:

9:30 - Authoring and Replication are suspended on cms. Patches are applied on cms, and the server is rebooted. This process should take less than 10 minutes. Authoring will be re-enabled after that (9:40 or so).

9:45 - 10:30 - OS patches are applied on each of the three www servers. Replication will be offline while this is going on, but external access to the www servers will not be interrupted.

10:30 - (or sooner, if the patches on www are complete) - Replication will be back on its regular schedule.
