Thursday, Jun. 19, 2014
SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 19, 2014 - Santa Clara University announced today that Michael Hindery has been named vice president for finance and administration.
As vice president for finance and administration, Hindery ‘76 will be a principal member of the University’s executive team, reporting to University President Michael Engh, S.J., to provide leadership for the administration and finance units. He will also play a key role in the University’s upcoming capital campaign, construction projects and the implementation of the overall strategic plan.
Hindery will have oversight for the University’s $840 million endowment, an annual operating budget of $387 million, and an administrative and finance team of 160.
“Michael Hindery is exceptionally well-qualified to assume a financial leadership role at Santa Clara at a time when we are working to make progress toward the University's strategic priorities," said Engh. “A seasoned executive with a well-rounded portfolio, his ties to Silicon Valley and to our campus complement his experience.”
Hindery has nearly 30 years experience in budget and finance, facilities management and campus planning and comes to Santa Clara University from University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) where he is currently vice dean for administration, finance, and clinical programs. As chief financial and chief administrative officer at UCSF School of Medicine, Hindery has general management responsibilities for a consolidated operating budget of $1.7 billion, a 1,900 physician, $450 million (in collections) medical group, and a workforce of nearly 6,000 faculty, physician, and staff employees.
From 1996 to 2006, Hindery was senior associate dean for finance and administration at Stanford University School of Medicine with general management responsibilities for (at the time) a consolidated budget of more than $1billion (including nearly $400 million in sponsored research), a workforce of nearly 4,000 employees, and more than 1.1 million square feet of research and administrative space.
Hindery spent 11 years at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and was associate vice president for medical center financial affairs and executive director for the School of Medicine Administration when he joined Stanford.
“Joining Santa Clara University’s executive team is a wonderful opportunity to build on my experiences and work with President Engh to help Santa Clara continue to grow and prosper,” said Hindery. “It is especially rewarding to return to my alma mater where I received an outstanding education and which has had a profound impact on my personal and professional development. I look forward to working with the campus community and am energized by the possibilities ahead.”
Hindery received an M.U.P. in urban planning from the University of Washington, an M.A. in American civilization from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.S. in sociology from Santa Clara University. While a student at Santa Clara University, Hindery was valedictorian and Nobili Medal recipient.
