SCU Provost Stephen Privett is new USF president

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 31, 2000 - The University of San Francisco's decision today to name Santa Clara University Provost Stephen Privett, S.J., its new president was greeted with pride and a degree of sadness today by SCU President Paul Locatelli, S.J.

In an e-mail sent to SCU faculty and staff shortly after the USF decision was announced at 11:30 a.m., Locatelli said, "I personally am losing a good friend and fine member of the president's staff and cabinet."

"On behalf of the Santa Clara University community, I want to congratulate Steve, and wish him every success in this new and challenging assignment." said Locatelli. "Steve will do an excellent job for USF."

Privett will replace John P. Schlegel, S.J., who is leaving USF this summer after nine years to become president of Creighton University, in Omaha, Neb. USF board president Dominic Tarantino said in a statement released today that "there were many qualities we required in a new president, and Father Privett demonstrated them all. He has the vision, experience and dedication needed to help us grow."

Locatelli said today, "While I am very happy for Steve and USF, at the same time I regret that Santa Clara is losing a key leader who has made an outstanding contribution to improving the University and the education we offer."

"Steve has been an excellent faculty member, vice president and provost," said Locatelli. "In his 16 years at Santa Clara, he has served the University extremely well by leading the endeavor to improve the academic quality of a Santa Clara education, implementing the provost organization, leading the planning council, and being one of the founders of the Eastside Project, to cite just a few of his accomplishments."

Locatelli also said he that by the end of April he will appoint an interim provost to a two-year term. A search for a permanent appointment will begin after the University's sesquicentennial, in 2001.
