Santa Clara, Calif.– Oct. 3, 2006. Santa Clara University has been named one of the “Fittest Colleges in America,” according to a survey done by Men’s Fitness magazine. The survey of nearly 12,500 students at more than 110 schools is published in the October issue of the magazine. SCU is No. 16 on the magazine's “fit list,” which includes 25 of the fittest colleges and universities in the country. Other California schools include: UC Santa Cruz (13) and California Institute of Technology (20).
SCU has a strong fitness and recreation program with more than 450 students, faculty, and staff participating in fitness classes this quarter. “Educating the whole person is a priority at Santa Clara University and that includes teaching students the importance of keeping a healthy mind and body,” said Janice DeMonsi, director of recreation at SCU.
On a daily basis, about 1,200 members of the campus community use the Pat Malley Fitness and Recreation Center. Each year, 13 intramural sports are offered, including flag football, volleyball, tennis, and ultimate Frisbee. This fall, flag football alone has 60 teams. Read more about the rankings.
