Forbes Magazine Names Santa Clara University One of America's Best Colleges
Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011
SANTA CLARA, Calif., August 4, 2011—For a fourth consecutive year, Santa Clara University climbed higher on Forbes Magazine’s Best Colleges list, jumping to No. 67 for 2011. SCU was ranked 115 in 2010, 150 in 2009, and 318 in 2008. In 2011’s West Coast division, SCU ranked No. 11 and No. 60 in best private colleges.
Forbes says its annual list of the 650 best undergraduate institutions focuses on the quality of teaching, great career prospects, graduation rates, and low levels of debt. The rankings are based on five general categories: Post Graduate success (30%), which evaluates alumni pay and prominence, Student Satisfaction (27.5%), which includes professor evaluations and freshman to sophomore year retention rates, Debt (17.5%), which penalizes schools for high student debt loads and default rates, Four Year Graduation Rate (17.5%) and Competitive Awards (7.5%), which rewards schools whose students win prestigious scholarships and fellowships like the Rhodes, the Marshall and the Fulbright. The complete methodology is available online.
Students choose Santa Clara University because of its small class sizes, the individual attention they receive from professors, and the successful careers they can pursue at some of the top companies in the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area. As Forbes indicates in its coverage of SCU, 77 percent of students graduate within four years, which is significantly higher than the national average of 53 percent.
Santa Clara University’s reputation is based upon its excellent academic programs in engineering, business, and arts and sciences. Its academics emphasize educating the whole person by requiring students to take courses that focus on critical thinking, communication, arts and humanities, global cultures, and ethics. All students must also engage in civic issues and social justice by interacting with communities.
