Purpose:
Mission Statement: Cowell Student Health Center is committed to providing physical and psychological care, as well as supporting the vision of the University to "make student learning its central focus" by educating our students in health maintenance and preventative care.
Basic Purpose of the job: The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing quality nursing care to the patients of the Cowell Student Health Center. The registered nurse will assess, plan, coordinate, implement, evaluate and revise direct patient care and education. The registered nurse will function within the full scope of the RN licensure, according to the California Nurse Practice Act and adhere to Cowell Student Health Center standards of care. The registered nurse collaborates, directs, delegates, assigns, guides and serves as a resource to the department and Cowell Student Health Center staff while modeling nursing professionalism through leadership, communication, education and participation.
I. Contacts
The registered nurse serves as a resource for the medical assistant and front office staff. The age of patient populations served is primarily older adolescent and adult (average being 17 to 35 years of age) and geriatrics (70 years of age and older). The registered nurse has both internal and external contacts which may include: patients, family members, practitioners, staff, student workers, vendors, community agencies, and regulatory agencies.
II. Position Status
The Registered Nurse position is a 40 hour a week position ten months a year (Mid-August through Mid-June). In the absence of the Clinic Manager, the Registered Nurse will assume certain clinical manager duties to ensure their completion in the manager's absence.
III. Job requirements
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, minimum of 3 years ambulatory care nursing experience, current California nursing license, current basic life support certification. Knowledge of AAAHC and Title XXII regulations and knowledge of scope of practice as defined in the Nurse Practice Act.
IV. Essential functions
Following are the essential functions of the job, along with the corresponding performance standards.
- Clinical competency:
- Provide clinical nursing care to patients utilizing specific skills to provide safe care as determined by the practitioner
- Assess patients utilizing physical assessment skills, patient history and all pertinent data collected by other health care personnel
- Prioritize assessment findings; recognize and interpret altered functions and abnormal diagnostic data. Report all abnormal findings
- Evaluate, re-evaluate and document patient responses to interventions, modifying nursing interactions as needed
- Communicate unexpected patient changes to practitioner in a timely manner
- Utilize educational resources and provide patients with educational materials as needed
- Age specific criteria:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to the differences in care requirements for adolescents, adults and geriatric patients, including, but not limited to: growth and development, medications, safety, special physical and psychosocial needs.
- Communication and Teamwork:
- Utilize effective communication techniques with patients, families, practitioners and staff to promote quality patient care.
- Delegate functions, assign tasks and set appropriate expectations for medical assistant and/or front office staff to ensure quality patient care is delivered.
- Demonstrate collaborative practice with team members utilizing conflict resolution and chain of command as necessary
- Conduct all work activities with respect for rights and wishes of patients, families, practitioners and coworkers.
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient and health center information at all times
- Display a positive attitude within the health center and across departmental lines to contribute to overall customer satisfaction
- Attend at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings
- Participate in departmental performance improvement activities
- Work responsibilities:
- Nursing assessments of patients as necessary
- Administer medications per practitioner order
- Administer immunizations
- Perform procedures which may include: intravenous therapy, catheterization, dressing changes, etc.
- Perform telephone triage/advice and/or nursing visits related to cold and/or allergy symptoms, suture removal, etc.
- Prepare patients for, and assist with, examinations/treatments/procedures
- Prepare rooms for patient exam/procedure
- Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies
- Process incoming telephone calls regarding medications (from pharmacies and/or patients)
- Perform quality control activities related to laboratory tests and sterilization equipment
- Document accurately in the medical record
- Obtain and process laboratory tests per practitioner order
- Coordinate referrals to outside specialists and medical resources
- Provide leadership and resource for medical assistant and front office staff
- Participate in staff meetings and committees, as requested
- Accountable for meeting AAAHC and Title XXII requirements and other regulatory agencies as applicable
- Comply with all health center policies and procedures
- Present neat appearance in proper attire
- Maintain acceptable attendance record with minimal absences and tardiness
- Adhere to procedures for patient charges and prudent use of material resources
- Complete assigned work in a timely manner
- Complete health center competencies
- Maintain current licensure and certifications as required by health center policy
V. Physical requirements
The Registered nurse position requires the following physical functions:
- General activity: stand, walk and sit throughout the shift
- Motion: bend, squat, reach, lift, carry, push, pull as needed
- Use of hands/feet for gross motor function and hands for precise motor function
- Ability to lift weight/exert force when needed
- Exposure to body fluids
- Hearing and visual acuity
