Purpose:

The Network Engineer reports to the Manager of Networking and Telecommunications (I.T.). The primary responsibility for the position is to work with the Information Technology network engineering team lead by the lead Network Engineer to maintain the operational stability of, provide technical support for and assist in design of the University's enterprise data network. This position will work with staff in Computer Operations, Administrative Systems, and other groups in coordinating services and providing appropriate support and services. The activities of this position must support the Mission and Goals of Information Technology and the University. The network engineer is required to create and live by a philosophy of service as stated in the Santa Clara University's Customer Service Statement. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position reporting to the Manager of Networking and Telecommunications (Information Technology). When necessary, the position requires work beyond the normal work hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays to support projects and maintenance work.

I. Essential Duties (major functions, each accounting for 20% or more of the position)

  1. Provides network engineering support to the university community. Provides diagnostic and troubleshooting for network problems.
  2. As a member of the Network Engineering team, assist in the ongoing definition and development of the enterprise network structure, services, procedures, and policies. Is responsible for designing the placement of, coordinating the installation of, and maintenance/operation of enterprise-wide networking equipment (including routers, hubs, switches, wireless devices).
  3. Works and coordinates with other I.T. staff as appropriate.

II. Specific Duties (representative examples of tasks or projects related to the essential duties listed above)

  1. :
    1. Perform problem analysis and resolution for network problems.
    2. Occasionally perform on-site (in the customer's office) support to customers.
    3. Be proactive in notifying customers of outages, changes, updates and new features.
    4. Must accept that on occasion and depending on the situation will be required to work beyond and in addition to the traditional work schedules/hours including project work and responding to failures.
    5. Required to wear a cell phone and pager.
    6. Required to work non-standard hours to respond to failures, outages and scheduled maintenance.
    7. Give support to other Information Technology staff in support of their job functions.
  2. :
    1. Designs the placement of and operates networking equipment.
    2. Prototypes and evaluates new and existing network technologies, equipment and services.
    3. Maintains the inventory of network assets. Additionally is responsible for administrating the communication infrastructure asset management and documentation system (Aperture).
    4. Administrator of the network management stations and equipment.
    5. In collaboration with the Communication Technician, maintains campus communication rooms.
    6. Responsible for insuring proper operation of equipment by developing and implementing appropriate monitoring and testing protocols. Monitor network for performance, security and policy violations and document as necessary for appropriate reaction.
    7. Maintains network address and routing tables.
    8. Responsible for configuring and implementing the campus wireless network overlay including the security infrastructure.

  1. Performs related duties as necessary.
  2. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  3. Attendance at industry conventions, presentations and conferences.
  4. Keeping current on technology trends.

IV. Qualifications (minimum required; maximum preferred)

  1. Professional:
    1. As a minimum, BS Degree in Computer Engineering or related discipline. An advanced degree and industry certifications is desirable.
    2. Two or more years experience in the operation, administration, maintenance and support of enterprise-wide data communications network
    3. Must be skilled as a technical troubleshooter.
    4. Knowledgeable in multiple networking services and protocols including TCP/IP, DHCP/BootP, DNS, RIP, ARP/RARP, VPNs, VLANs, Subnetting, WLAN, and Routing.
    5. Experienced in use of network management, troubleshooting and analysis tools like Wireshark, Fluke NetTools and cabling test equipment.
    6. Knowledgeable in the use and operation of a Personal Computer.
    7. Must be able to handle and operate equipment, which can be located in racks, on tall shelves or in cabinets at heights up to 8 feet and weighing up to 75 pounds.
    8. Experience with Cisco routers, switches, and wireless equipment is required.
    9. Must have experience interacting with other people in a customer service capacity.
    10. Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required.
    11. Must demonstrate an ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.
    12. Must be a "self-starter" and be able to proactively identify problems (or potential problems) and propose solutions. Initiative and creativity are important qualities to make the person in this position successful.
    13. The University technology environment is very dynamic and challenging. A person with a good breadth of experience and who demonstrates the ability to adapt to changes while working in a complex technology infrastructure environment is sought.
