Jan Orvick
Administrative Assistant to the Director
Katie Cronin: Where did you go to college and what did you study?
JO: I attended the University of San Francisco, majoring in Public Administration with an emphasis in Non-Profit Management. I am passionate about non-profit organizations because of the positive impact they have on the community.
KC: How did you arrive at your position today?
JO: Over the years, I have worked at several other non-profit organizations. When my son was in the fourth grade, I was a chaperone on the California History Tour at the de Saisset, and I remember thinking "I would love to work at Santa Clara University." Years later, I still remember the tour and the thought of working at SCU. When the Administrative Assistant position became available, I applied, interviewed and was offered the job!
KC: What are your responsibilities as Administrative Assistant?
JO: I am an assistant to the Director, but I also assist the rest of the staff. In addition, I oversee all of the Museum's financials, manage the facility, supervise student employees, coordinate events, and administer the Museum's membership program.
KC: What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?
JO: The most rewarding aspect of my job is working at an organization that greatly enriches the community through the many exhibits and programs the de Saisset hosts. The educational impact the Museum has furthers the Jesuit focus on educating the whole person.
KC: What advice would you give someone thinking about pursuing a museum career?
JO: Anyone thinking about pursuing a career in museums must volunteer at any place that is available, for gaining exposure on the volunteer level will give you deeper understanding of what it is like to work in a museum. Another helpful tip is to conduct informational interviews, as networking plays an instrumental role in both learning about different positions and finding jobs in the future.
KC: What hobbies do you do outside of work?
JO: I love to be outdoors. My family and I like to take advantage of this beautiful area by hiking and biking. Also, I belong to a book club, as I am an avid reader. Mostly, I like spending time with my family and friends.
KC: Since you are relatively new, what most excites you about this position?
JO: The opportunity to learn about the art world is very exciting. I have always been interested in the art world, but this job will enable me to become more knowledgeable about this fascinating field.
