Dear Santa Clara University Community,
Like the rest of our campus and our alumni community, I was thrilled to cheer on our women’s soccer team during their historic run to become the NCAA Division 1 National Champions. We have all been so proud of the strength, tenacity and excellence of our student athletes, demonstrated during a delayed but abbreviated season, extensive COVID testing protocols and restrictions, extended isolation from their families and friends, and academic commitments on top of their athletic commitments.
At yesterday’s celebration, we highlighted how we are especially grateful to Athletic Director Renee Baumgartner, Coach Jerry Smith, our Athletics staff and others across campus who have supported these athletes. In addition, there has been incredible support from across campus including all the faculty and staff who have served as teachers and mentors to our student athletes. From faculty sending messages of support and encouragement, to all the passionate fans and boosters (students, staff, alumni, parents and friends) who were there in person in North Carolina,or at the watch party at PayPal stadium or the welcome to the team on their return, the Bronco energy and pride have been heart-warming.
Congratulations once again to our soccer program and especially to our women's soccer student athletes. You have our immense gratitude for lifting our spirits, elevating our University to national heights and bringing us together. Thank you and go Broncos!
Sincerely,
Lisa A. Kloppenberg
Acting President
