Dear Students,
I hope that you are enjoying a rest-filled holiday. We are looking forward to you being back on campus! I’m writing today with a run-down of all you need to know before your return. It may look like a lot, but there’s some very important information in here so please give it a good read.
Updated COVID-19 Information
As we shared in an email on Monday, Dec. 20, classes will resume as scheduled on January 3. As a reminder, testing for COVID-19 is strongly encouraged before arriving back on campus. If you test positive during the winter break, please observe all isolation protocols and precautions.
Additionally, all students are required to get tested using Color twice during your first week back on campus.
Changes to Class Format for First Two Weeks
During the first two weeks of the Winter term (January 3 and 14), most courses will be offered online. Some will continue to meet in person, but any student who needs to access the course content remotely will be accommodated. We made this decision to give you additional space and flexibility to tend to your health, get settled into the new quarter, get your booster shot, and help us slow the spread of COVID-19. You are still very welcome on campus during this time. Unless you choose to, you do not need to change your travel plans. All student services will continue as previously communicated and as detailed in this email. Additional Information is at Prepared SCU.
Note: School of Law classes will resume the week of January 10, as scheduled. During the first week of the law school’s spring semester, law faculty will accommodate the request of any student who seeks to access the course content remotely.
New From Student Life
As we gather again as a community, I also wanted to share several updates about our ongoing efforts to increase mental health services, expand opportunities for social connectedness, and support your overall well being. All of this and more can be found at the Vice Provost for Student Life website, which has been updated to give you a one-stop shop for all you need to know as you come back for the Winter quarter. Check back here and the main campus calendar often to learn about the latest. There are more than 80 opportunities to engage and participate in January alone.
Mental Health Training and Grief Support
At Risk Mental Health for Students Course
Santa Clara has partnered with Kognito to offer a brief [40-minute] online course: At Risk Mental Health for Students. The interactive experience equips students with skills to support their own mental health and that of their peers. The course introduces positive coping strategies, prepares students to recognize signs of distress, effectively communicate their concerns, and take action to find additional support. Take a few minutes now to create an account and complete this important course. Use enrollment key: santaclarastudent
Mental Health First Aid
Santa Clara has launched Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), a nationally recognized training program that teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health concerns and substance use. Training will be offered in two, four-hour time blocks over consecutive days. [Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. followed by Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.] Participants will need to be available for both days and for the entirety of the training which will be held in person. Each session is limited to 30 participants. Click on a date to secure your spot in one of the MHFA student sessions: January 28-29, February 25-26, March 4-5.
Drop-in Grief Support Group
We will offer a drop-in Grief Support Group in Benson 201 every Monday between 5 and 6:30 p.m. beginning on Jan. 3, 2022. No registration required; feel free to drop in.
Mental Health Staffing Support
Searches are currently underway for two additional direct service positions in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS): Counselor in Residence and an additional Case Manager. Recruitment efforts to fill the remaining vacant staff psychologist positions continue.
Partnering with Local Therapists/Increased Access to Therapists
The University is partnering with local therapists to expand the availability of individual therapy offerings in CAPS and through community referral.
Promoting Social Connectedness
The Winter of Wellness is a campaign to educate students on the wellness model at SCU. We are happy to offer a mix of virtual and in-person events to the Santa Clara community beginning with the Winter Student Involvement Fair on January 3, 4, and 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day in the Benson Memorial Center.
The Winter Wellness Hop is Wednesday, January 12, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Malley Center. Build your resilience toolkit as you learn how to navigate the ups and downs of a new quarter! Door prizes, raffles, food, and engaging mini-workshops will get the term off to a great start. Students can complete this form to sign up for one or more of the workshops.
Campus Recreation Updates
The winter quarter will be busy for the Campus Recreation program - we will be bringing back Club Sports competitions home and away, and some intramural sports leagues.
Fitness Classes Return January 3
We are excited to have more fitness classes this winter quarter. All classes are free and are first-come, first-serve. Visit the Winter 2022 Fitness Class webpage to see the schedule and policies and procedures.
Faith Support through Campus Ministry
Students are welcome to stop by Campus Ministry to talk about what matters most over a cup of tea or coffee. Campus ministers are ready to offer you a listening ear, to help you connect with the Bronco community, or to reflect on your beliefs and values. Staff members are available every day in their offices on the first floor of Benson, or they can connect you with a member of the Jesuit Community.
At the Mission Church, in collaboration with the Jesuit Community and Campus Ministry, you can find support for your personal faith and spiritual needs as well as community liturgies. We offer daily mass at 12:05 pm at the Church, Wednesday evening Eucharistic Adoration (7:30 pm) and an Ignatian Lunchtime Examen on Fridays offered virtually at 12:50 pm. The Church is open for visits and prayer every day and on many evenings during the week.
If you would like an appointment with a Campus Minister, please stop by our offices in Benson, call 408-554-4372 or email Associate Director Julia Claire Santos, jcsantos@scu.edu.
Natural Disaster Support
We know students who have been impacted by a natural disaster such as a wildfire, hurricane, or tornado may be in need of additional support. Students can complete this form on behalf of themselves or a peer, and faculty and staff can submit the form on behalf of a student. The Office of Student Life will reach out to the student directly to offer support and assistance.
As your time allows, I encourage you to complete the brief At Risk Mental Health for Students Course before you return to campus.
Enjoy the remainder of the holiday break,
Jeanne Rosenberger
