Karina Gutiérrez awarded the Marquette Jones Award

Marquette Jones Award
In recognition of a faculty member whose creative projects and advocacy in the arts or law have empowered and advanced women in those fields. The award alternates between the College and the Law School each year.

Karina Gutiérrez is a multi-faceted assistant professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance whose work addresses the intersection of politics and performance. Leveraging her skills as director, dramaturg, actor, and scholar, Karina connects students and community audiences with feminist and women-authored productions such as To the Bone, a play about the struggles of Latina immigrant workers in the poor working conditions of a chicken farm.

Karina was instrumental in bringing Dolores Huertes to campus for a moderated conversation with To the Bone playwright Lisa Ramirez. Most recently, Karina directed the world-premiere reading of WMB by Marisela Treviño Orta at TheatreFirst in Berkeley. In WMB, a worldwide virus threatens healthy pregnancies and makes painfully clear wealth, technology, and healthcare inequalities. Karina's upcoming directing endeavors include Bees and Honey at the Marin Theatre Co., The River Bride at UC Berkeley, and Richard II at the Magic Theatre.
