From Theatre to Surgeon
Marc M. Serra '00, has carved an exceptional path since his days as a Theatre and Dance student. His journey, marked by a profound dedication to both the arts and sciences, showcases the diverse potential and transformative power of a Jesuit liberal arts education.
After graduating from SCU, Marc's aspirations took a significant turn towards the medical field. He pursued his passion for healthcare by enrolling at Columbia University, where he earned his Dental Degree. His commitment to excellence and his desire to make a broader impact led him to join the US Army, marking the beginning of an illustrious military career.
Marc's time in the Army was characterized by rigorous training and specialization. He completed a four-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, followed by an additional one year fellowship in Maxillofacial Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery. These experiences not only honed his surgical expertise but also instilled in him a sense of discipline and leadership that would define his career.
In his role as the Program Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Madigan Army Medical Center, JBLM, WA, Marc has made significant contributions to the field. His dedication to education and mentorship was recognized when he received the prestigious Excellence in Education Award from the US Army Dental Corps Chief. This accolade underscored his commitment to fostering the next generation of skilled surgeons.
Marc's leadership abilities and unwavering dedication did not go unnoticed. Most recently, he was promoted to the rank of full Colonel and appointed as the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Consultant to the Surgeon General of the United States Army. This esteemed position makes him the highest-ranking Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in the Army, responsible for overseeing more than 100 surgical residents and staff surgeons across the US Army Enterprise, including regions in Asia and Europe.
Despite his numerous achievements and accolades, Marc remains grounded and reflective about his journey. He often credits his time at SCU with giving him the foundational skills that have been instrumental in his success. The creativity, discipline, and perseverance he cultivated as a theatre and dance student continue to influence his approach to surgery and leadership.
