Student Allowance for Law Students

For Law students, at the beginning of Fall and Spring semesters and Summer term, the ACCESS office will reset each user's SmartPrint account and replenish it with a SmartPrint free-printing allowance. Left over funds from the allowance do not carry-over into the next term.

Student Allowance for all other non-Law Students

Undergraduate and Graduate students who are not in the Law School will receive their SmartPrint free-printing allowance at the beginning of Fall Quarter. These funds are for the entire school year (not just the quarter). Left over funds from the allowance do not carry-over into the next year or to the Summer.

Additional Allowance for School of Engineering Students

New starting fall of 2021, the print quota for students in the School of Engineering has been converted to an additional SmartPrint allowance. SoE students will receive an additional allowance in the Fall, Winter, and Spring and Summer terms if they are taking an Engineering course in that quarter. Left-over funds from the allowance do not carry over into the next term.  For example, if you are taking an Engineering course in Fall, you will get an additional allowance called SoE SmartPrint.  If you then do not take any Engineering courses in Winter, you will not have any SoE SmartPrint allocation and will only have the normal SmartPrint allocation.

Printing Costs

There is a per page cost associated with each page printed. The total cost of the print job is deducted from your SmartPrint allowance at the time you release your print job at the Release Station. When the free-print allowance is depleted, you may use funds from your FLEX account to pay for any additional print jobs. The balances of your SmartPrint and FLEX accounts are displayed at the Release Station when you press the Account button after swiping your ACCESS card. You may also review your available printing balance within the SmartPrint Print Center.

SmartPrint Allowance Balance

There are a number of ways to check your SmartPrint allowance

  • After you have tapped at one of the printer release stations, press the Account button and it will display your balance. SmartPrint should show and that is amount you have in your SmartPrint allowance. If you do not see SmartPrint, you have probably depleted your SmartPrint allowance for the year.
  • After logging into the Print Center (sp2.scu.edu), in the lower left corner of the screen under My Funds, you should see what is left in your SmartPrint allowance. If you do not see SmartPrint, you have probably depleted your SmartPrint allowance for the year.
  • At one of the ACCESS Value Transfer stations or on the ACCESS web site, you can check your funds held at ACCESS. When you request an account balance, the SmartPrint allowance shows as a negative dollar amount. ACCESS considers the SmartPrint allowance as a credit, so it is displaying a negative credit or how much of the credit you have used. If it shows -$1.28, you have printed and used $1.28 of your allowance. If you are an undergrad and you see -$48.00, you have depleted all of your SmartPrint allowance for the year.
