Deadline to submit suggestions
The Working Groups continue to work diligently to compile as many ideas as they can for consideration. To that end we need the help of the full SCU community. As you consider the future of the University over the next five or ten years, do you have a suggestion for ways to improve efficiency, generate revenue, or reduce costs? Submit your idea via the online form -- Deadline for ideas from the community is Wednesday, April 5. Thanks to all those who have generated ideas so far.
Short term budget issues versus the Sustaining Excellence Project
Many have asked the Steering Committee whether the short term budget issues provided the impetus for the Sustaining Excellence Project (SEP). The short answer is no. The President initiated the SEP in light of the robust university strategic plan and the understanding that the current climate of higher education in the US requires creative and critical thinking to ensure the success of institutions. From a place of great strength, Santa Clara University seeks a position to grow strong even more in the years to come. The SEP is designed to support this growth.
While SCU did experience short term budget issues in FY 16 and FY17, the various causes and impacts of these are short-term in nature and the University has addressed them in the planning for FY18. If you would like more information on that, please take a look at the February Budget Forum's slide summary. While the issues of the SEP and the budget are both related to the financial situation of the University, the distinction between these two components is important to keep in mind.
We are very grateful for all of the participation in the proces thus far, especially from those who have submitted ideas and those individuals from across campus collaborating in the Working Groups. This collective effort will help SCU sustain excellence for generations to come.
