Research Projects from the Inaugural SVP Cohort

Gratitude is extended to the mentors of the Inaugural cohort: Lindsey KalkbrennerLeslie Gray, Michelle Templeton, and Kathleen Hughes, who extended their expertise and guidance to the fellows. Fellowship cohorts also offered each other support and feedback throughout their projects and were thankful for additional faculty support from Christopher Bacon, Jake DialesandroC.J. Gabbe, and Tony Nguyen.

Inaugural Cohort, 2022-2023

Ayla Flanagan SVP Fellow holding a potted plant

Ayla Flanagan, '23, Nourishing the Future: Research on Building Sustainable Food Systems for a Resilient and Healthy Santa Clara. Ayla's project focused on the root cause of challenges in sustainable food systems and reliance on food pantries. Through her research and interviews with food pantry managers, food recovery directors, urban gardeners, and policy and advocacy directors, Ayla brought forward recommendations for the City of Santa Clara.

Connor Grady, '23, Designing an Equitable Shared Solar Program for Income-Qualified Multifamily Housing Residents in the City of Santa Clara. Connor's project focused on designing a shared rooftop solar program for multifamily housing in socially vulnerable communities. His research was conducted to inform the strategic creation of a program designed to incentivize rooftop solar energy installations. 

 

Declan Bernal SVP Fellow

Declan Bernal, '23, Assessing Equity Gaps in Santa Clara's Sustainable Transportation Network. Declan's project focused on assessing three notable areas in the City of Santa Clara with limited access to sustainable transportation. In identifying these areas, he found that the lack of sustainable transportation infrastructure coincides with socioeconomically vulnerable populations according to demographic and other data.
