Welcome to the Tuesday Teaching Tip, an easy-to-implement tool that you can use immediately in your classroom teaching.
TUESDAY TEACHING TIP: Bringing Scholarship Into the Classroom
Scholarship and teaching are both foundational elements of higher education, yet they are often viewed as separate endeavors in our professional practice. How can we meaningfully integrate our scholarly pursuits into the classroom? Incorporating frontier research and ongoing scholarship into your teaching can inspire students, deepen their engagement with course material, and help them envision themselves as contributors to their fields. It also presents an excellent opportunity to identify students motivated to pursue scholarly endeavors alongside you!
Here are a few ways to get started
- Share Your Research Journey: Take a moment to share your own research and how it connects to what students are learning. This can inspire them to think critically about how their academic work could contribute to future research. You may also invite guest lectures from other scholars in the field to bring diverse perspectives and expertise into the classroom.
- Incorporate Research-Based Assignments: Introduce students to research within your field by incorporating assignments that require them to explore current studies or scholarly articles. This helps them see how course content connects to ongoing scholarship.
- Encourage Independent Exploration: Challenge students to pose their own research questions related to the course. Even a small assignment focused on generating questions can spark curiosity and a deeper sense of ownership over their learning. You may be pleasantly surprised by the originality and insight they bring!
