June 10, 2020
Dear Graduate Students,
I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy during this most unsettling time in our nation’s history, as we continue to face uncertainty with the ongoing global pandemic and we grapple with urgent matters of racial injustice. As Fr. O’Brien stated in his Message on Racial Injustice, “At Santa Clara University, we are committed to creating a community of generous encounter, a place where all feel respected, welcomed, and safe.” You enrich and enliven our diverse academic community. No matter where you are in the world today, you will always be present with us in our beloved community.
On June 1, I announced updates for the fall 2020 term for our graduate programs in business, engineering, law and pastoral ministries. I write today with fall term updates for the School of Education and Counseling Psychology and the Jesuit School of Theology and fall calendar and modality information for all of our graduate programs.
Each graduate program conducted its own scenario planning process, taking into account student populations, learning objectives and accreditation rules specific to each program. These processes have prioritized health and safety guidelines and curriculum and pedagogy considerations, as outlined in the President’s guiding principles for Covid-19 Resilience & Recovery planning. Upon weighing considerable community input and a range of other key factors, including technological resources for remote instruction, student access to library, technological and campus resources, and student placement and practicum requirements, the Academic Affairs Committee and the Provost approved the following program changes for our graduate programs in the fall.
For the fall term, all graduate programs will maintain their existing academic calendars with the following start dates.
- Leavey School of Business - Most graduate programs in the School of Business will be 100% online for the fall 2020 quarter. The Executive MBA program will be offered in person with safety measures consistent with Santa Clara County and State public health guidance. Classes begin on September 21st.
- School of Education and Counseling Psychology - The School of Education and Counseling Psychology will be 100% online for the fall 2020 quarter. Classes begin on September 21st.
- School of Engineering - Graduate programs in the School of Engineering will be 100% online for the fall 2020 quarter. Classes begin on September 21st.
- School of Law - The School of Law is currently planning for some in person courses for first year students pending Santa Clara County health restrictions. Upper division students will be fully online with the exception of some work in clinical courses. Classes begin on August 17th.
- Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries - The Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries will be 100% online for the fall 2020 quarter. Classes begin on September 21st.
- Jesuit School of Theology - The Jesuit School of Theology will offer courses fully online for the fall 2020 semester. When safe and permissible, JST will augment remote coursework with in-person encounters and ministry experiences. Classes begin on September 8th.
We agreed that any modified face-to-face instruction that may occur will end before Thanksgiving. This will help to both reduce the risks associated with travel during flu season as well as exposure of our community to the virus.
International students are important members of our diverse community at Santa Clara and we know that, as an international student, you may have questions about your particular academic program. Our International Students and Scholars team is working to support you, and you can find FAQs for your academic program here.
These decisions are temporary in nature as we continue to closely monitor Santa Clara County and State public health guidance, and we intend to resume in-person instruction in phases as soon as it is safe to do so. Our dedicated faculty will continue to adapt and innovate course content and instruction in order to continue providing you with a transformative Jesuit education.
Wishing you and your loved ones health, safety, peace,
Lisa Kloppenberg Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
