Dear Campus Community:
We write to inform you that we have accepted the recommendation of the Undergraduate Studies Council, the Academic Affairs Committee, and the Student Affairs Committee to modify the way in which grades for a repeated course are calculated within an undergraduate student’s grade point average (GPA).
In brief, the current language in the Undergraduate Bulletin section on “Repetition of Courses'' stipulates that when a student repeats a course in which they have received a grade of less than “C-”, the grades of both the original and repeated course are included in the calculation of the student’s grade point average. The revised policy will include only the highest grade for the repeated course in the GPA calculation. This “best attempt” policy is in keeping with best practices at other institutions and will apply to the calculation of both overall GPA and major GPA. Units will still be awarded only once for the course, and grades for all attempts will remain on the student’s transcript.
This change becomes effective on January 3, 2024, for all undergraduate students enrolled in the 2023-2024 academic year and beyond.
We wish to thank the members of the various committees for their advocacy on behalf of our students.
Sincerely,
Kate Morris and Ed Ryan
