Mario Belotti - Rest in Peace
Dear SCU Community,
I am saddened to share the news that Mario Belotti, Professor Emeritus of Economics, died on Friday at the age of 97. We join with his wife, Rose, and their children, Paul, Claudia, and Julie Ann, in mourning the loss of their dear father. As a colleague and teacher to so many over his six decades at SCU, Professor Belotti will be remembered fondly.
Professor Belotti came to Santa Clara in 1959 and served as Chair of the Economics Department (1962-1984) and as the Director of the Institute of Agribusiness (1988-1996). A beloved teacher who simplified economics concepts in engaging and memorable ways, Professor Belotti taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Having witnessed the birth and growth of Silicon Valley, he integrated his economics expertise in the local business community. He was instrumental in designing and organizing the prestigious Economic Symposiums and chaired 32 of the symposiums. His annual Economic Forecast, which he presented for 50 years, was a much-anticipated event for alumni and members of the Bay Area business community. His work also went well beyond the region - he shared his professional expertise around the world, notably as an economic development consultant in underdeveloped countries.
Professor Belotti’s impact goes much deeper than the few highlights here and we are grateful for his wonderful life that he shared so generously with the SCU community.
