James M. Glaser Named Executive Vice President and Provost at Santa Clara University
Dear Santa Clara Community,
I am pleased to announce that we are welcoming James M. Glaser to the Bronco community as the University’s provost and executive vice president, effective July 1, 2024.
James (“Jim”) is an accomplished leader who comes to Santa Clara from Tufts University, where he is dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, and is also responsible for admissions, financial aid, student affairs, the library and other units that serve Arts and Sciences and Engineering at Tufts, with combined budgets of roughly $535 million and close to 1,300 faculty and staff.
Jim is a noted scholar of electoral politics and political behavior, and an innovative academic leader noted for building programs across multiple disciplines. Under his leadership, Tufts acquired The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA). Investments made in the school in financial aid, operations, and admissions turned around enrollments and resulted in a budget surplus.
Jim's appointment comes at a critical juncture for Santa Clara as we look towards the future with Impact 2028, our strategic plan that positions the university for greater impact in pursuit of our Jesuit mission of creating a more just, humane, and sustainable world.
You can find more information about James’ background in the press release.
I want to thank our extraordinary search committee who worked tirelessly on this important search. Please join me in thanking Craig Stephens, Sanfilippo Family Professor, Biology and Public Health, and Zenobia Lane, vice president for human resources, who led this search.
I also am very grateful to the members of the search committee for their excellent work throughout the recruitment process: Matthew Duncan, Shá Duncan Smith, Gina Hens-Piazza, Brad Joondeph, Christopher Kitts, Becky Konowicz, Nydia MacGregor, Rima Nemechek, Karen Peterson-Iyer, Elaine Scott, Paul Soukup, S.J., Sherry C. I would like to express my deep appreciation and gratitude to Acting Co-Provosts Ed Ryan and Kate Morris for their outstanding leadership the past few years. They have navigated challenges and created opportunities for many across campus and approached their work with thoughtful care for others, dedication to the mission and excellence of the University, and consummate professionalism. I am grateful that they will continue in their current roles until June 30, 2024.
Please join me in welcoming Jim to the University community. We look forward to his leadership to help us continue to build upon our legacy of excellence and increase our impact in Jesuit higher education and our global society.
Sincerely,
Julie Sullivan
President
