Faculty and Staff Supporting Students
Faculty and staff hold a unique opportunity to extend care and empathy to our students. University life can sometimes overwhelm students, leaving them feeling isolated, anxious, depressed, or even hopeless. These emotions can significantly disrupt their ability to navigate academic challenges.
Each of us plays a vital role in addressing the mental health needs of our students. As you interact with students daily, you may be the first to notice signs of distress. Trust your instincts. If you're concerned about a student, don't hesitate to express your compassion and offer support. Reach out to the student directly, and if necessary, report your concerns to the CARE Teams. You can do this by contacting the Office of Student Life or submitting a CARE/Student of Concern Referral. SCU CARE embodies the University's commitment to our students, helping them access resources that foster resilience and conquer challenges.
If you're uncertain about the best way to assist a student and connect them with resources, please consult our SCU CARE Protocol, specifically the section titled "How to Help a Student in Distress." You can also get in touch with the Office of Student Life for guidance.
Red Folder
The information provided in the SCU Compassionate and Responsive Educator (SCU CARE) folder (commonly referred to as the Red Folder) is a valuable resource to assist you when working with a student who is in distress or causing you concern. The Red Folder provides examples of troubling behaviors, tips for how to approach a concerning student, and how to connect that student to the appropriate resource.

Student of Concern
If you are aware that a student is struggling with personal or emotional difficulties or may be exhibiting concerning behavior, please file a “Student of Concern” report. A staff member will reach out to the student within 24 business hours to offer support and resources. Unless the student is suicidal or a danger to others, the ultimate decision to access resources belongs with the student.
Concerns that are solely academic should be relayed directly to the Drahmann Center. |
