Executive Function Skills Explained

"The phrase “executive function” refers to a set of skills. These skills underlie the capacity to plan ahead and meet goals, display self-control, follow multiple-step directions even when interrupted, and stay focused despite distractions, among others.” (Harvard University, 2024)

What affects Executive Function skills:

  1. Any disturbance to the brain tissue that might affect the frontal lobe (the part of the brain that manages executive functions).  
  2. Disability (i.e., ADHD, Autism, Learning difficulties, etc.)
  3. Brain damage (i.e., Alzheimer’s disease, Brain tumors, Dementia) 
  4. Other factors (i.e., stress, loneliness, lack of sleep, and lack of exercise) 

No One Is Born with Executive Function Skills,

but Nearly Everyone Can Learn Them.
