Santa Clara University has partnered with SensusAccess to provide this conversion tool. This tool allows students, faculty, staff, and alumni with SCU email accounts to convert documents between a wide array of formats and into alternative formats including:
- Audio (MP3)
- eBook (EPUB, MOBI, DAISY)
- Digital braille
Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
This tool can also convert images and scanned documents into other formats including:
- DOC
- DOCX
- HTML
- TXT
- RTF
The tool uses optical character recognition (OCR) to convert images of text into editable or selectable digital text. This is useful if you want to magnify the text, listen to it, edit it, or view it in a particular way.
Alert icon Warning: There are often errors and typos when using OCR, especially if the source file is a low-quality scan or image.
Alert icon Tip: If you want to convert scanned documents or images of text to an accessible format, first convert your source file to DOCX. Then, in Microsoft Word, correct any mistakes before converting the DOCX file to your desired format.
LaTeX and MathML
You can upload LaTeX files in TEX format to have them converted into HTML pages with math formulas represented as MathML. Screen readers and other assistive technologies may have better support for HTML and MathML than for PDF files generated from LaTeX.
Camino
You can also access this tool in your Camino course by clicking “Convert Files” in the course sidebar menu or by clicking the SensusAccess icon next to a file, page, or assignment.
How It Works
There is a 4-step process to submit files for conversion:
- Upload your file
- Select output format
- Customize the output format
- Enter your email address
Alert icon Note: You must use a valid SCU email address.
You will receive an email when your new file is ready. It can take between a couple minutes to a couple hours to convert files, depending on the size and type of your files.
Your new file will be stored on SensusAccess’ server and available for you to download for 7 days. After 7 days, it will be deleted from the server. Your new file may also be provided as an email attachment.
