SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 4, 2012—Five highly experienced new trustees were elected to Santa Clara University’s Board of Trustees , bringing to 45 the number of members of the governing body that helps steer strategies and priorities of the 161-year-old private University.

"We are honored and pleased to welcome to our board of trustees five excellent, professional new trustees with a long history of dedication and loyalty to Santa Clara,” said President Michael Engh, S.J. “We know we are in good hands as we implement our new strategic plan and undertake new capital projects."

The new members all hold undergraduate or graduate degrees from SCU. They are:

• Kristi M. Bowers, sales and marketing director at Kings Mountain Vineyards; advisory board member for SCU’s Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.
   
• Howard S. Charney, senior vice president at Cisco; co-founder of 3Com.
   
• Mary Mathews-Stevens, education philanthropist; member of the SCU Board of Fellows.
   
• Jeffrey A. Miller, chief executive officer at business-consulting firm JAMM Ventures; former venture capitalist.
   
• Betsy S. Rafael, vice president, controller, principal accounting officer at Apple Inc.

Kristi M. Bowers
Kristi M. Bowers '90, MBA '97, is marketing director for Kings Mountain Vineyards, a family business that is a French-style, sustainably farmed vineyard in Woodside, Calif. She is a director for The BASIC Fund, which has awarded $55 million in scholarships to more than 17,000 children over the past 14 years. A devoted SCU alumna who is highly involved in University events, since 1999 Bowers has served as an advisory board member for the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, which was created by her parents, Linda and A.C. “Mike” Markkula, a founder and former CEO of Apple. She is also director of the family’s philanthropic arm, the Markkula Foundation.

Howard S. Charney
Howard S. Charney, MBA '73, J.D. '77, is an engineer, serial entrepreneur, patent law attorney, and a 35-year veteran of Silicon Valley’s high-tech industry. As senior vice president at Cisco, he contributes to the networking company’s strategy and direction, advises customers on implementing critical Internet technologies, and communicates Cisco’s vision to key audiences worldwide. He was one of the four founders of 3Com Corporation, and the founder of Grand Junction Networks, which invented Fast Ethernet and low-cost switching, and which was purchased by Cisco in 1995. In addition to his SCU degrees, he received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He sits on the boards of several technology companies, and is on the advisory board for SCU’s Center for Science, Technology, and Society.

Mary Mathews-Stevens
Mary Mathews-Stevens '84 and her husband Mark, a former partner in the venture-capital firm Sequoia Capital, have been active in education philanthropy with their support of numerous educational organizations in California. Earlier in her career, Mary spent 14 years in the commercial real estate industry in Silicon Valley. She served as a Vice President at Cornish & Carey Commercial Newmark Knight Frank in Santa Clara. Their philanthropy has included a $500,000 gift to endow a fellowship program for graduates of the high school Mary attended in Portland, St. Mary’s Academy, who wish to attend SCU. In a gesture to honor the late former president of Santa Clara University, in 2008 the couple donated $7 million for the Paul L. Locatelli, S.J., Student Activity Center.

Jeffrey A. Miller
Jeffrey A. Miller '73, MBA '76, has more than 35 years of high-tech experience, in semiconductors, hardware, and software companies. Prior to establishing the business-consulting firm JAMM Ventures, Miller was a venture partner with Redpoint Ventures, mentoring CEOs of portfolio companies. He was previously chairman and CEO of Documentum, an enterprise document-management software company that became one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the country under Miller’s leadership. He spent the early years of his career at Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel, also holding senior marketing and general management executive positions at Adaptec and Cadence Design Systems. He serves or has served on the boards of Lithium, MarkLogic, McAfee, Accept Corp., Data Domain, Datameer, ServiceNow, Unicru and American Prairie Reserve. He was previously co-managing director of SCU’s Center for Science, Technology, and Society.

Betsy S. Rafael
Betsy S. Rafael '83 has held the position of vice president and corporate controller for Apple since August 2007, and was appointed to the additional role of principal accounting officer in January 2008. She previously worked at Cisco Systems in the roles of vice president, corporate finance; corporate controller; and principal accounting officer. Before Cisco, Rafael worked in senior finance, executive, or management positions at Aspect Communications, a provider of customer relationship portals; Escalate, an enterprise e-commerce application service provider; Silicon Graphics; and Sun Microsystems. She began her career with the accounting firm Arthur Young & Co.
