Establishing Roots in Engineering

Shoba Krishnan always gets excited for Preview Week. Even though the department chair of electrical and computer engineering won’t go on to teach each student in attendance, Krishnan knows this is her first chance to meet a handful of students she’ll work closely with over the next four years.

“It seems we have at least a couple of students who end up enrolling at SCU and taking classes with me,” Krishnan says. “People get so excited to learn about the program at Preview Week. I get excited too.”

Krishnan is known in the School of Engineering for her dedication to students. She doesn’t just put in extra hours to teach the students in her class, she takes care of them: helping them get involved in research projects and secure internships. That relationship often starts with her mock class at Preview Week.

This year, Krishnan will host “Intro to Engineering” on April 7. The virtual event, which will be hosted on Bronco Exchange, explores how science, technology, and engineering can impact the world around us.

More specifically, it considers how Santa Clara—located in the center of innovation for the world—is specifically positioned to lead engineering and technology in an ethical and humanitarian direction.

“Our program is really focused on engaged and interactive learning,” Krishnan says. “Being in Silicon Valley there are lots of exciting opportunities for undergrads to get involved in from research opportunities to industry mentorship.”

Admitted students are encouraged to sign up for virtual events throughout Preview Week and to register for the in-person event on April 9. Other virtual events include:
