Dear Santa Clara University Community,
I am pleased to share the State of the University address in video format this year. Thank you to Santa Clara Jesuit Community Rector Luis Calero, S.J., and Associated Student Government President Abigail Alvarez ’22 for joining me as we share the successes and challenges of the very unique year we've had so far, and our many points of light and hope ahead. Below are some campus accomplishments which are highlighted during the video.
Thank you, and Go Broncos!

COVID-19 Preparedness
Thank you to the dozens of staff and faculty from across campus who took on additional responsibilities to help us respond to wave after wave of COVID-19 impacts. They have worked every day to analyze trends and changing guidance; assess University needs and capacity; and find creative solutions—all in very short time frames. Their work has brought us to this moment, where positive cases are declining and are more manageable; our campus is vaccinated and on its way to being fully boosted; and our students are enjoying the fullness of their Santa Clara education in person, following protocols that will see us through safely together.
Increasing Avenues for Student Mental Health
We are so grateful to our Board of Trustees, the President’s Cabinet, the University Budget Council, the caring staff of Cowell Center, CAPS, Office of Student Life and more— as Santa Clara has committed new resources and renewed our strong commitment to student wellness. The website of the Vice Provost for Student Life contains the list of increased resources for student mental health such as:
Kognito "At Risk Mental Health" —Courses for faculty/staff to identify and help students in distress and for students to support their own or peer mental health.
Mental Health First Aid —Program to identify, understand, and respond to mental health concerns and substance abuse.
Drop-in Grief Support Groups —Every Monday in Benson
Partnering wtih Local Therapists —Expanding therapy offerings in CAPS or via community referrals |
Mental Health Staffing Support —Searches underway for two additional CAPS positions, as well as a case manager and counselor-in-residence
Cowell Center Support Groups —For affinity groups including students of color; those with family issues; and more
Promoting Social Connectedness —Offerings for wellness and student involvement.
