Dear Members of the University Community,
I am sorry to announce the death of long-time faculty member Thaddeus John Whalen Jr., professor emeritus in Economics and father of Mike Whalen ‘89, Knight-Ridder/San Jose Mercury News Professor in Communication. Our hearts join with Mike and his family, including his mother Eleanor, and his siblings Thad '84 and Debby '87, in their sadness over their father’s loss.
A graduate of SCU from 1958, Dr. Whalen taught economics in the Business School at SCU for a remarkable 48 years, covering courses in Principles of Economics, Economic History, Aggregate Economic Theory, and International Business, among other courses. In addition to his teaching, he served as Director of Undergraduate Education, Chair of the Economics Department and Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Business School. He was very active in the local community and held appointments as director or trustee on various boards including Junior Achievement, Public Affairs Council and Greater Bay Bank. With his friend and SCU colleague Mario Belotti they founded the Bank of Santa Clara where he also served as director. Santa Clara University has lost a dedicated member of our community - we shall remember Dr. Whalen for his dedication to our mission and generous service for so many years.
Notes of condolence can be sent to Mike Whalen, care of the Communication Department:
