Spring 2006
Lunch & Discussion
Wednesday, May 10, 2006
noon - 1 pm
Williman Room, Benson Memorial Center
Spring's literary cuisine will bring together literature, food and pirates. The featured book will be X Marks The Spot : The Archaeology of Piracy edited by Russ Skowronek and Charles Ewen. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 10 from noon - 1 pm.
Johnny Depp as Captain Sparrow; peg-legged Long-John Silver with his parrot screeching, 'Pieces of eight, pieces of eight;' the Treasure Island Resort & Casino in Las Vegas; and Walt Disney World's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction all purport to capture some aspects of the famed and infamous pirates of the seventeenth through early nineteenth centuries. How accurate are these depictions? Is there any basis for them in the material record of the past? Join us for Literary Cuisine on May 10 to explore what archaeology tells us about the real world of pirates.
Both of the editors will be present as the featured speakers. Dr. Russ Skowronek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology & Sociology at SCU and and Dr. Charles Ewen is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at East Carolina University.
Bon Appetit Dining Services will prepare a special meal for the occasion:
- Caribbean Slaw (shredded cabbage, papaya, toasted coconut, pineapple, red bell pepper & green onion with a Caribbean jerk dressing)
- Mango Glazed Chicken
- Coconut Curry Rice and Black Beans
- Drunken Fruit Salad with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
