Through the program, I hope to develop my understanding of politics and the media in
my hopes of pursuing journalism. As a journalist, I will report on politics not just in the U.S., but globally. In order to do so, it is crucial to understand varying political systems and cultures. This is a weakness of mine as I have always lived in the Bay Area. My only exposure has been through frequent visits to my parent’s hometown in Mexico, where I realized culture is deeply rooted and affects the way people interact with not only each other but the media and political systems. Through the courses I intend to take, I would learn about media and politics, the European Union, democracy in Europe, as well as culture and language. Additionally, I hope to pursue an internship opportunity in the media industry in order to expose myself to Spanish media and assist me in completing my Ethnic Studies capstone in the Winter of 2018.
