The courses available at this university and program are nearly infinite! My interests are centered around social issues, poverty, human rights, and bilingual education. As all of these interests are not available as courses at SCU, I found combinations of these in the many courses offered at the Alberto Hurtado University in Chile.
As I strive to work with first generation, minority, high school students in low-income communities, courses such as Poverty and Intervention, Poverty and Development, Language and Society, Sociology of Education, and many others are sure to help feed me with knowledge and a greater understanding of the communities I hope to empower and learn from. One course I am particularly excited about is Poverty and Intervention. Most of the course readings focus on human rights and dynamics of vulnerability and intersectionalities, which I learned an overview of in a Sociology class this past quarter. Although I have found the Urban Education minor offered at SCU, it requires courses that do not interest me. With my strong interest in high school education and poverty, my options are greater and real more towards what I want to pursue through the Direct Exchange program in Chile, while also strengthening my Spanish skills.
