What is an externship?

An externship is a position performing legal work outside the law school under the supervision of an approved sponsor, for which the student earns course credit toward graduation.  It is similar to an internship, in that the goal is for the student to gain practical experience in the field.  What constitutes an externship is the ability to earn course credit.

Can a paid position be an externship?

Yes. Externships can be paid or unpaid.  

Can a position where I work remotely be an externship? 

Yes. Santa Clara Law permits remote, hybrid, or in-person externships.

When can I do an externship?

Students are eligible to participate in the externship program beginning the summer after their 1L year. Students must have completed the Critical Lawyering Skills class and secure an externship sponsor before registering. Please see Student Requirements for more information.

How do I register for an externship?

How many externships can I take?

Students can participate in up to three externships, for a maximum of 12 units. Please see the Pink Book or contact Student Services for more information on units and graduation requirements.

Can I repeat an externship with the same sponsor or supervisor?

Yes, but there are some additional requirements. You will need to submit a Petition for a Repeat Externship. The steps for approval of a repeat externship are found here. 

Can ExPro find me an externship?

Students are responsible for securing their own positions in the field.  But ExPro is happy to help students in their search for externship opportunities. See Find an Externship.

I’m an international student; can I qualify for an Externship?

Yes, but you must complete a CPT Work Authorization Form before you can participate in an externship. Make sure you visit SCU ISS for a list of complete and up-to-date requirements.
