Externship Types

Civil Practice/High Tech/Social Justice (CP/HT/SJ):

Students interested in civil practice, high tech law, and social justice find placements in public interest agencies, private law offices, government agencies (except a court), corporate departments, high tech companies, or non-profits.

CP/SJ/HT externs must enroll in LAW 590 (if this is your first externship) or LAW 597 (if this is your second or third externship).

Judicial:

A judicial externship will allow students to experience life in the courtroom as they assist judges and law clerks with a variety of courtroom related policies and procedures. The opportunity to understand the courtroom from the judge’s chambers is a valuable and unique opportunity and experience.

For judicial externships, students must also submit a Legal Research and Writing Form in addition to their registration form.
This additional form must be completed by either your LARAW or Advocacy professor. Your registration form will not be processed without this additional form.

Judicial externs must enroll in LAW 594B (for part-time judicial externships, first externship), LAW 594C (for full-time judicial externships, first externship), or LAW 670 (if this is your second or third externship).

Criminal:

Criminal justice externships take place in a District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, or firm or organization with its main focus (or student’s main focus) being the legal function or practice of criminal law.

Criminal justice externs must enroll in LAW 591A (if this is your first externship) or LAW 561 (if this is your second or third externship).
