Dr. Léocadie Lushombo: A Theological Voice Working Toward Synodality

JST-SCU faculty member appointed to Vatican Study Group on synodality and named by Publica as one of the top ten African women theologians you should read.

Dr. Léocadie Lushombo, Assistant Professor of Theological Ethics at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University (JST-SCU), has been appointed to a prestigious eight-person Study Group by the Vatican Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops. This group of scholars will address key topics raised by the Synod on Synodality on "hearing the cry of the poor and the earth."

The Study Group brings together experts in various fields, including Catholic social teaching, theological ethics, practical/pastoral theology, spirituality, and formation. Dr. Lushombo's expertise will be invaluable as the group delves into critical issues facing the Church.

"I had accepted the position of working with this group of scholars when I got an email from the office of the Secretariat of the Synod; I had no idea this would become somehow official," Dr. Lushombo shared, reflecting on the opportunity. "We've really dived into the work. It's been a significant amount of effort: reading, thinking, and gathering concrete thoughts from local Churches. It's been quite a challenging but enjoyable listening exercise!"

Dr. Lushombo's dedication to theological scholarship and service extends beyond the Study Group. She was recently recognized by Publica as one of ten African women theologians whose work deserves wider attention (link to Publica article here).

Through her scholarship and service, Dr. Lushombo is making a significant impact. She serves as both a model and a voice for the transformational power of the equitable inclusion and education of lay women and religious sisters for leadership and ministry in a synodal Church.
