Johnson Scholars Class of 2018 Post-Grad Plans
A compilation of the Johnson Scholars Class of 2018 favorite parts of being at Santa Clara University and their plans beyond campus. Read on to see where they are all off to next!
Dylan DeTray Dylan’s favorite aspect of Santa Clara is the Jesuit values that permeate through all aspects of the University. He says that, “all of my professors and classmates have been supportive and collaborative in nature, which has led to energizing education throughout my four years here.” The same atmosphere encouraged him to study abroad to Tokyo, Japan - An experience that continues to influence his interests and passions post-grad. Dylan is currently working as a Financial Analyst at Bloomberg in San Francisco. |

Marli Dunn One of Marli’s favorite aspects of SCU was the availability of the University's immersion trips. She admires the University's vision to foster a sense of community, spirituality, and social justice, and is thankful to be able to witness the vision-in-action over three separate immersion experiences. The trips helped to supplement her spiritual education at SCU, and broadened her campus connections and relationships as well. After graduation Marli plans to return to Arizona, where she will continue to shadow physicians and prepare for the MCAT. |

Owen Huelsbeck After graduation Owen plans to take a gap year to apply to law schools. In addition, he will be taking the opportunity to travel quite a bit and to spend as much time with family as he can. He really looks forward to picking up his little brother from school and making dinners with his parents. |

Hannah Kortbawi One of Hannah's favorite aspects of SCU was the lifelong relationships she built with peers and faculty. After graduation, Hannah will return back to Seattle to work in Mary-Claire King's Medical Genome Sciences at the University of Washington. She will be modeling a mutation in a human neuroligin gene to link it to a known disease state. |

Amy Lutfi One of Amy's favorite aspects of SCU was how it encouraged students to get involved outside of the classroom through immersion trips, fellowships, and study abroad programs. After graduation she is pursuing a J.D. at the USC Gould School of Law. |

Karen Mac One of Karen's favorite memories of SCU was getting to meet coffee farmers and factory workers on an immersion trip to Nicaragua with her fellow Johnson Scholars. These encounters motivated her to explore the impact of fair-trade in Bolivia as a Global Fellow and lead a group of Johnson Scholars on an East LA immersion. After graduation she plans to make the big move to New York City to intern at a venture philanthropy fund, where she'll be continuing to pursue her interests in international development and socially responsible business. |

Harshi Mogallapalli One of Harshi's favorite memories from SCU was going on the Nicaragua Immersion trip during the Winter break of her sophomore year. That was an important experience for her to realize how much she wanted to spend her time traveling abroad and exposed her to global social justice issues. Her post grad plans are to move back to Milwaukee and do some biomedical research while also volunteering and applying to medical schools. |

Erika Sasaki One of Erika's favorite aspects of SCU was the supporting, uplifting community of students and faculty that all shared the common value of compassion. She enjoyed all of her classes and experiences at Santa Clara thanks to the commitment of mentors she had formed relationships with. After graduation, Erika plans to work for a year as an ER scribe at Good Samaritan Hospital and as a research assistant at Stanford while continuing her internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Hospital. She hopes to attend medical school and pursue her dreams of becoming a physician. |

Taylor Tagawa One of Taylor's favorite memories of SCU was performing in Images, SCU's annual dance production. She was especially grateful for the opportunity to perform her own original choreography piece at Images 2018. Taylor is working as a Financial Analyst at Seagate Technology, a data storage company based in Cupertino, CA. Taylor looks forward to remaining in the Bay Area and beginning her career in corporate finance. |

Hannah Warnecke One of Hannah's favorite aspects of SCU was being a public health major and having chances to actively work toward applying community health interventions during her time as an undergraduate. She also enjoyed being involved with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics and examining the overlap between ethics and public health. After graduation, Hannah will work at a summer camp before pursuing a career in nursing. |
