Inclusive Excellence Newsletter - February 2023
Dear Bronco Family,
“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
― Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Why We Can't Wait
The start of 2023 has been quite challenging. We have contended with an atmospheric river and environmental challenges that have impacted and displaced our most vulnerable populations. The U.S. has experienced an onslaught of mass shootings, several of which have directly affected our surrounding communities, specifically Monterey Park, Half Moon Bay and Oakland. Earlier last month we tragically lost Tyre Nichols due to police violence and have been retraumatized by the video released last week. We are also currently contending with the aftermath of layoffs from tech companies that have had a tremendous impact on local families and communities.
Just as we have been affected by local and national events, our SCU community is also shaped by what is happening on the global level. Whether it’s the continued movement in Iran as they have surpassed 100 days in their fight for Women, Life, Freedom with over 500 protesters, including children, killed in the fight for human rights, to the ongoing political struggles in Peru, the increasing violence in the Israeli – Palestinian conflict, the worker strikes in the United Kingdom and the continued impact of COVID19 in different parts of the world.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and as we continue to uproot systemic and structural oppression and fight for human and civil rights we need to continue in our work as accomplices by helping one another. We need to fully lean into building a just, humane and sustainable world through our actions and contributions and commitment to creating a world where thriving for all is paramount.
As we reflect on what is going on in the world, we want to highlight a few passages from All About Love by Bell Hooks, “I feel our nation’s turning away from love…moving into a wilderness of spirit so intense we may never find our way home again. I write of love to bear witness both to the danger in this movement, and to call for a return to love.” “Everywhere we learn that love is important, and yet we are bombarded by its failure…. This bleak picture in no way alters the nature of our longing. We still hope that love will prevail. We still believe in love's promise.” (Igwebuike will be coordinating a book discussion on All About Love later this month)
During this time, how can we care for ourselves while serving others? Each of us will respond to challenges differently. Please know that there are care and support resources for students and faculty/staff.
Black History Month 2023
A number of Black History month events will be taking place throughout the month of February. We encourage the SCU community to keep updated via email and other social media channels for upcoming events. A few of the events are spotlighted throughout the newsletter. The Inclusive Excellence Division is committed to coordinating a better and refined calendar for events and activities for all of the upcoming respective heritage months.
