iPad Program Tutor | Job Description (AY 2024-25)

Thriving Neighbors is a community-based learning and leadership program that affords SCU students the ability to obtain professional work experience while contributing to the educational development of K-12 students and members of th local communities. Thriving Neighbors promotes social justice oriented engagement to enhance vocational discernment; a deep commitment to scholarship; and sustainable development facilitated by SCU’s Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education. This opportunity offers in-depth community engagement which will be hosted within the Greater Washington Neighborhood’s Latino community in San Jose. 


Position Description
The iPad Program serves Pre-K to 2nd grade students by utilizing technology tools to support academic success strategies. The primary responsibility is to support students to persist in their learning  and reach their academic goals. Tutors provide in-person group support (typically small groups of 3-4 students) in mathematics and literacy. The program promotes student centered learning with the emphasis and content of the tutoring sessions being driven by the needs of the students. 


Requirements

  • Good academic standing (3.0 GPA or better)
  • Transportation to get to local partners’ locations in in San Jose
  • Availability to commit to assist in person on Saturdays morning (16 sessions every other week, calendar is provided at the beginning of the academic year)
  • Ability to work with children in a supervised setting
  • Experience and comfort presenting to groups
  • Passion and excitement for teaching and learning
  • Reliable, punctual, self-motivated, timely in communication responses
  • (Upon hiring) Complete LiveScan Fingerprint background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tutoring experience
  • Leadership experience
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting
  • Able to understand conversational Spanish

Duties

  • Engage in on-site tutoring
  • Attend orientation and team/supervisory meetings (once per quarter)
  • Produce brief post-session formative student observation reports
  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice
  • Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners

Hiring

  • Academic year employment: 10/01/2024–6/1/2025
  • Sessions: 16 Saturday sessions (every 2 weeks)
  • Hours: 9:30 - 11:30 AM
  • Stipend: $250 per quarter
