Dr. Mackenzie joined the SCU faculty in 2014 as Assistant Professor of Public Health. She received her DrPH from UC Berkeley and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Health Equity Institute at San Francisco State University. Her scholarship focuses on intersections of gender and sexuality, racism and health in the United States. She is Principal Investigator on a 5- year NIMH K01 Award investigating the cultural and relationship contexts of HIV, gender and sexuality among behaviorally bisexual Black men and their female partners. She is also conducting a two-year study of police violence and health among African Americans. Her book, Structural Intimacies: Sexual Stories in the Black AIDS Epidemic was published in 2013 by Rutgers University Press as part of their Series in Critical Issues in Health and Medicine. Her public health teaching and advocacy focuses on structural and policy changes for racial justice and health equity. Her courses at SCU include Community Health and PHSC 190, Senior Capstone, with a focus on gender, sexuality, and health; and violence, inequality and health.
