Caring for Our Common Home
We’re well into the fall term on campus, which has been enlivened by so many partnerships and events that advance SCU’s commitment to a “more humane, just, and sustainable world.” Although environmental justice and sustainability work are nothing new to the University, we are particularly hopeful about a new campus wide initiative, Sustainable SCU. This is a collaboration between Mission and Ministry and the Center for Sustainability, and includes nearly 75 faculty, staff and students who are committed to develop SCU’s next sustainability plan. Sustainable SCU is inspired by Pope Francis’s encyclical, Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home, and provides a planning process to focus SCU’s goals and strategies through 2030 on our shared commitment to care for our common home.
Here at the Ignatian Center, many of our student leaders share this same commitment. In fact, five of our Summer 2022 Jean Donovan Fellows worked for SCU’s tUrn, which hosts a climate action week twice a year. They also volunteered at other environmentally focused organizations across the country. In the story Environmental Justice - Not Just an Esoteric Interest, But an Obligation, they share their reflections on what it means to care for our common home, here, there, and everywhere.
SCU Mission Week | On Mission - In Solidarity
This November, Santa Clara University will host Mission Week, an inaugural week-long celebration of the mission of the University. SCU's mission encompasses all the many ways we express our Jesuit values, our grounding in the Catholic tradition, and our commitment to building a more just, humane, and sustainable world. We are excited to embrace our Jesuit, Catholic values and celebrate our collective mission-driven work.
